It's interesting to view his time in Spain with the flight of British citizens abroad to similarly fight for causes they believe in. You don't have to go much further than ISIS to see this happening in the world today.

George Orwell was a Democratic-Socialist and was under surveillance from MI5 as a result. Orwell once defined a real Socialist as “one who wishes – not merely conceives it as desirable, but actively wishes – to see tyranny overthrown.”
Consequently, Orwell was anti-Stalinist, despite being a socialist. He considered Stalin’s government a totalitarian regime. In 1936 he travelled to Spain to fight in the Spanish Civil War against the fascists. He joined the Worker’s Party of Marxist Unification (POUM) as they were anti-Stalinist, instead of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE – the major communist party at the time and a supporter of Stalin).
Animal Farm is thought to outline the corruption of the communist ideals set, very specifically, by Stalin, while 1984 depicts life under totalitarian rule.
